Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
