The Manager Maresca Labels Pre-Match Period as The 'Toughest 48 Hours' at the Blues
Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca stated that the build-up to the weekend's win against Everton constituted "the worst 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.
The 44-year-old offered a puzzling comment in his after-game interview even after securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those three precious points lifted Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, potentially lightening the atmosphere after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's winless run to four matches.
Yet, when asked about the full-back's assist and overall display, Maresca surprisingly shared his displeasure over the preceding 48-hour period within the organization.
"How the lads are eager to develop has been superb and this is the reason why I praise them - because with a host of issues, they are doing very well after a complicated week," he stated.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the past 48 hours have been the toughest because many people withheld support from us."
When pushed further on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City boss continued: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at supporters or the press: "I love the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."
Fitness and Disciplinary Crisis
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing injury and suspension problems, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.
"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to acknowledge because the work from the players is fantastic."
Chelsea's success over Everton cemented their standing in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled next week.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was unclear what exactly caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.
In that timeframe, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a training session at the training ground, faced a pre-match press briefing where he appeared at ease, and secured a victory over an in-form Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any specific press stories had irked him, if social media discourse played a role, or if it was something deeper from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an matter involving the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
