The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
