No less than 64 individuals were killed in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities said.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas adjacent to the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of a major organised crime groups.

State officials said no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Residents have likened the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network have been expanding their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement reported more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, in addition to dozens of firearms.

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies follows a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
