Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The economist declared he would retreat from public positions after Congressional panel disclosed his frequent communications with Jeffrey Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.

Summers commented in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and look forward observing their advancement".

The prominent academic, who previously headed Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released communications showed that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected his choice to resign.

"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the company remarked.

Legislative Background

This news arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would compel the US justice department to release its records on Epstein.

The bill will subsequently move to the office of President Trump for signature. He has indicated he expects to approve the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following pushback from his followers.

A group of Epstein-related messages made public by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The communications showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the academic to notable international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were made available with the public, he expressed he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he desired "to restore trust and fix bonds with the people closest to me".

The professor served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He headed the university from five years and remains a academic there. When declaring his step-down from public duties recently on this week, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in DC where the professor was a prominent member, verified that the economist was not associated with the institution.

The former official entered the board of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
