Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
